Avoiding Root Rot: What Actually Causes It and How to Prevent It

Root rot is one of the most common reasons houseplants decline, and it’s often misunderstood. Many people assume it’s caused by watering too frequently, but the real issue is lack of oxygen around the roots.
Healthy roots need a balance of moisture and air. When soil stays dense, compacted, or constantly saturated, oxygen cannot reach the roots. Over time, this creates the perfect environment for rot-causing bacteria and fungi.
Using well-aerated substrates, containers with proper drainage, and allowing water to move freely through the root zone reduces the risk significantly. Clear pots also help by making moisture levels and root health visible, so issues can be spotted early rather than after damage is done.
Root rot is rarely sudden. It’s gradual, and prevention is always easier than recovery.
